How to sew faux turn-up hems (or cuffs) like the ones in Balthasar's BOZ pants? Let me show you!
Faux or fake turn-up hems are a sa super simple way to add some 'je ne sais quoi' to a handmade outfit. This technique was already worked into the Cisse pattern and is now one of many options in the BOZ pants which you can see Balthasar wearing here. How do you get started with this kind of finishing? Let me walk you through it with a couple of extracts from the tutorial that comes with one of my five new sewing patterns for babies and toddlers.
I know, dear foreign followers, that these are now only available in Dutch but I promise you that is changing soon! The translator started working on it yesterday 🎉 woop woop 🎉 which means English Zonen 09 patterns and tutorials are on the way! Start out with the pattern of your choice and add hem allowance. I advise people to add 3 cm in the case of the BOZ pants but that's for babies and toddlers, you might want a bit more when using a larger size. Also, keep in mind that you lose a bit of length because of the way you'll be making this. (see further). If you don't want that, you'll have to add that length to your hem allowance.
Before you continue with the steps you can see in the visuals, stitch the front crotch seam, the back crotch seam, and then the inside seam. Press all those seams open.
Follow my instructions in the visuals. In step 16 I advise you to stitch at 0.5 cm from the fold but you can change that to 1 cm when making something in a larger size.
Keep in mind that you always lose a bit of length with this technique (3 times the distance you're stitching from the fold) so if you don't want that, you need to add a bit more hem allowance). With the BOZ pants that would be 3 times 0.5 cm, thus 1.5 cm.
That's it! A peek at a part of my tutorial and a super-easy way to spruce up your makes 🙌 like I did for Balthasar's outfit 🥰 a combo of the BOZ pants and a polo version of the BOZ button-up, the last of the BOZ collection to launch but already available in pre-order! 😇🙌
